The regular meeting of the Newburgh School District Board of Education began at 7:30pm. Board President Lewis led the meeting. There was a public audience of between 7 and 4 people.
The utility tax proposition passed. No votes from Resch and Woodhull.
A motion passed authorizing the Superintendent to contract with Orange County for Special Education services for the 2009-2010 school year.
A budget increase was approved in order to accept a generous donation to Meadow Hill School's grounds upkeep.
New job descriptions for Music Education positions were approved; extended school year positions were approved.
Board member Fuchek reported on four committee meetings: Teacher Policy Board; Library; Personnel (where the job description and extended school year position motions originated); Save (where they are finalizing changes to the code of conduct, including consequences of infringements).
Board member Woodhull reported on: Buildings and Grounds; Health and Safety.
Board member Popitti reported on the Orange County School Boards meeting.
Board member McAfee reported on the Curriculum Committee -working on literacy program for South Junior High School, will included 50-60 minute literacy block and three tiers assigned based on reading level, not grade. Also working on training for math program for pre-k to grade two involving integration of manipulatives into the curriculum.
Board member Bowles reported on: Diversity Recruitment (there was a Future Teachers of America workshop at Mt. St. Mary's); Central Compact (budget presentation and election of officers occurred).
There were brief reports from administrators. Summer planning and budget follow-up planning is ongoing.
A resident of First Street complained about on street parking problems in the area of West Street School. Due to the many school staff vehicles, residents are finding it difficult to find parking spaces. The person was quite thrilled to hear that there are no summer school programs at West Street!
The Board adjourned to executive session to discuss a litigation matter, Augustin v. Enlarged City School District Of Newburgh.
