Newburgh School District BOE Meeting Tuesday, November 24, 2009

There was a regular meeting of the Newburgh School District Board of Education on November 24, 2009. The meeting started early, at 6pm, and went straight to executive session. The meeting resumed in public at 7:10pm. There was an additional executive session prior to the HR items on the agenda, from 7:25 to 8:05 "for legal advice form the attorney". Two resolutions were added to the HR agenda regarding suspended employees. One is with pay, one without (with some provision that that could change if necessary).

There were no public comments on either agenda or non-agenda items.

Poppiti reported on Orange County Schools Board (presentation on emerging technologies), SAVE, and Finance committee meetings.

Resch reported on Policy: one item the committee discussed was the policy for moving from grade 8 to grade 9. Dr. Bolton will be working on this.

Vessey reported on Compact Central Committee.

McAfee reported on Library (working on next years budget and collaborations with other libraries); Curriculum Committee (looking to increase language offerings in the district, German is receiving most consideration, looking to purchase a "clicker" electronic feedback device, looking at community links for a hospital training program, considering an advanced cullinary arts course).

Bowles reported on Personnel Committee (tech trainer position) and Diversity Comittee (idea of a package from the district for newborns, reviewing dropout statistics).

Nothing very notable from the administrator reports. Assistant Supt of Finance Pacella did say that the state aid issues are not yet resolved; there is a possibility of significant cuts next year; and Stewart Airport is looking for clarity about who does their assessments and whether they can do PILOTs (Payments in Lieu of Taxes).
