Newburgh School District Board Workshop Meeting Tuesday, June 22, 2010

32 retirees were recognized. A few corrected their announced years of service.[I will list the retiree names in a later post.]

Eric Motley gave a presentation about the Parents of Color Advisory council, which was started back in 2006 or 2007. The council has about 20 active members. It meets the first Saturday of the month at 54 Grant Street from 9 to 10.

[The meeting moved from the auditorium to the usual conference room. Superintendent of Schools Saturnelli and Board Members Giudice, Freeman-Resch, and Vesely were not present.]

The new code of conduct is scheduled to be voted on soon. There are "not a lot of changes". The changes were done at SAVE committee meetings.

Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction Forgit clarified that the Audit of Curriculum Grant can be spent through November as long as the contracts are set up by August 31. One item this will be spent on is "Write-On", a 6+1 writing traits program.

During the H.R. agenda Board Member Poppiti asked about the elimination of kindergarten sections at GAMS, "are we still waiting?"

Assistant Superintendent Human Resources Leimer answered that Mr. Jensen was able to provide some projections which included the reduction of 2 sections at GAMS. Thought this would result in class size of 24/5. Mr. Jensen interrupted, correcting to 22.

Executive Director, Instructional Technology Jensen: The numbers came in strong this year. 682 registered now (less at same time last year). Ended up with 920 this year. Projected number for this year is 967. [Including the GAMS reduction, the number of kindergarten classrooms would be around 41.]

Forgit: There may be a need for integrated co-teaching and stand alone classrooms for SWD (which could alter the classroom counts/numbers).

A question was asked about pre-K numbers.

Board President Fucheck: Currently have enough space at Washington Street. Do we have Junior High numbers?

Jensen: Looking at 310 to 320 each building. 349 Heritage. 294 South. [These numbers would be for incoming 7th graders at these schools.]

Forgit: Goal was 300 each building but some unanticipated retentions.

There was some discussion about logistics of proposed Memoranda of Understanding with Unions. The CSEA ratified their MOA (92 - 76). The NTA and NTA T.A. MOAs were set to be voted upon on June 25. If positive, then Board vote will stay on the agenda.

[The workshop agenda indicates that all three of these MOAs are "for the Period of July 1, 2010 through June 30, 2011.]

The Board went to executive session to discuss the employment history of a particular individual; and "would not take action after". The executive session ran quite late.
