In addition to the staff cuts announced at the February 18 Budget Input meeting, the Newburgh School District Board of Education approved several other significant cuts and changes during a Special Meeting on Thursday, February 19, 2009.
The Young Parents Program will be eliminated. There is a possibility that the program will exist for one more year as part of a planned phase out process.
West Street School will be switched to a late schedule school. This is expected to save money due to more efficient bus scheduling.
Meadow Hill and Temple Hill will operate on a split schedule. This may mean that some range of grades will operate on an early schedule and some on a late schedule.
The use of the Stewart site as an extension of Heritage Junior High School will be eliminated. This may be why the HJH Open House event scheduled for February 25 has suddenly been "postponed until further notice".
Funding of the Extended School Year Program (Summer School) will be cut by $1 million, leaving a budget of $0.5 million.
Blues Clueless
As of the latest meeting it sounds like summer school is in limbo, possibly switching from five week to only four. Young Parents and Heritage at Stewart seem to remain in the "cut" category.
Nooooo!!!! The Young Parents
Nooooo!!!!
The Young Parents Program CANNOT be cut. It helps so many girls graduate high school when they otherwise couldn't. So many more stay in high school (or junior high) longer than they would have otherwise. Their children reportedly enter kindergarten prepared and ahead of many of their classmates. The program has room for 25 kids, and they're currently filled with more on a waiting list!
Where are this district's priorities!? Why do we have a new damn football field when the futures of these girls and their children are literally at stake!?
Stewart Campus
I stumbled across this site after hearing a "rumor" about the Stewart campus being closed. I wish there was a quick way to get this website address out to the majority of parents and taxpayers in the Newburgh school district. I just contacted a friend with a child currently enrolled in the Stewart campus ... she has NO IDEA that her child's school will be closed next year. I am amazed at the information on this website and applaud the creators! Now if we could just get the word out. Perhaps the Board and Central Administration would have to answer some questions. I will do my part to get this address out to everyone I know!
